If you know any information about the people, ships, places etc, that the airfields of AW are named after, then please fill out the appropriate box with what you know and i will add it to the page ASAP.
If something is already next to the pilot you were going to write about, send your information anyway as i will still add it.
A place you want to be, relative to your

Slug to be, no matter WHAT you're talking about! :)
John Richards..DOSvet who used an Amiga long ago..and flew AW.. 'airwarrior & amiga'.. he is an 'AirMigan' ..a premier mustang driver even now, he taught me.

Bigrod

Sloth
One of the first total 'Buff' drivers.. he did it better than anyone. Park on a CV in his A-26, behind the takeoff point, gun you until you came up in a flak, then drop his eggs.. classic. Drive a B-17 to a target..no I mean on the 'ground' man.. 'below DAR'..man he was evil :)
-GE
That would be "Da Sloth", a AW Buff Driving legend. Sloth had gone into temporary retirement when I came aboard, but I always heard the stories of his Buff exploits! He's back now, flying AW3 and Buffing away. ( Note: People like Sloth and I "Buff"...we don't PORK! :)

Anvil
Anvil was and is Ariel Butler - an old time Air Warrior and subsequent (and current) Kesmai employee. He was one of the best ever at E fighting

Kalvin
Kalvin is named for Lord Kalvin - Kelton Flynn, founder of Kesmai and father of Air Warrior

Ridge Runner
RR was THE first AW Customer (outside of Kesmai employees...of which there were like 3 or something). As I heard BB tell the story: "Kelton said, "Hey, look...there's someone in the arena". It was Ridge Runner.

One of the first Dok haters, he died of a heart attack just before I discovered AW, it was a wake up call for those who think AW is just a game. It's the people in it.

Gonzo
Named after the infamous "DoKtOr GoNzO". A DOS AW "legend". He was the designer, implementer, CM of most of the scenario events in the early days of AW. When Mac's were no longer supported he migrated to WB's, not being a DOS kinda guy. He was EXTREMELY abrasive when he wanted to be, which was most of the time, but contributed a vast amount of energy and time to AW.
Mike McClurg: Did the first AW Con Video, and it inspired the opener for AW3.. rock an roll an fighters.. a kick ass video. A premier spit driver (he was a muskie after all)
-GE

Who's the 20k spits over C:1? That come down and take out the ack, and then vulch until they die? Who's the 20k spits over A land whenever you go lookin for 'em? Muskies. Gawd I hated them. Always above, always in spits, usually in numbers.
-GE
Stiletto
He 'owned' me for so long.. I was his dweeb :) He shot me 8 times in a single spit flight, waiting patiently while I got co alt and came at him. The day I got him, co-alt ..in spits..was a 'good' day.
-GE
Bug
Grey Bear
Voss
The "Vossman" as he is called, works for Kesmai now, wasn't THAT great a pilot, but did tremendous artwork for Air Warrior.
Icer
Warhawk
'Warthogs' I quit because Fencer fragged me.. then Fence-dweeb said not to worry, and kicked me out again a day later. Jerks run by a headjerk then. Buncha panty-waist wannabe spaz militia. A few good pilots in the mix (notably Heater and Hi-Tech)
-GE
Dutch
We got in a flame war just before my first AW Con.. he brought a gun, as he thot I was going to break his bones (grin) ..can you imagine? We spent the first moments chatting and it was GREAT to actually meet the man behind the bluster :) My introduction to the whole 'Con' thing ..even Fence-Dweeb was human.. in a jerk-off two-faced political kinda way.
-GE

Phoenix
FUBAR leader when I joined, he flew a P-38 IRL (and a Spit 9, and a Stang, etc) as owner of Eagle Aviation years ago. Truly a shame he didn't get 'into' full realism, said it cut the social aspect out of the game, no more fight songs as we closed to do battle, he was hilarious and a great guy to know.. the newsletter brought tears, I mean these guys were 'gone.'
"Blue Baron" also known as BB. Produced Air Warrior II and Air Warrior III, and he is a dweeb. :)
Icer
No, no, NO!...this is the other half of the field named "Gypsy"! :)
Actually, BlueBaron was the "librarian" on the old GEnie AW forum, before taking that job at Kesmai.
A move which has benefited this AW community more than most can ever fathom! BB does refer to me as his
virtual "ill-tempered brother"...in jest of course , so I like to think we "share" this one, but alas, it truely is ALL Jonathans! <Salute> BB!

My old "AD" CO...we started flying together back in 1992, I believe. Back in the DOS SVGA days...the box version that launched 10,000 dweebs into AW :) Hardrock still flys AW.

Fencer
The "GREATEST MUSTANG PILOT!" Bingo could fly em like a spit, well Fencer did it even better. :) He put a name for himself in that P51D. Works for Kesmai(I think)
Icer
Fence-Dweeb.. those who think he flew a Stang well don't remember his 3 wingmen or other flights with him. He was a dweeb in one-on-one, relying on his wingmen to keep him clear. Woe to the wingman that let the King of B-land die. Wannabe Kernel.. fried chicken is his speed.

Holmes
Named for Paul "Holmes" Jordan. Ho was the first AW trainer I encountered ( on my 6! ). Ho has been a great contributor to AW over the years, as a trainer, an archivist, a great story writer and a great guy to "do lunch" with when you're in Manhattan. Holmes loves scenarios and is THE man I want escorting my Buff!
=GB=
Monk
Naughton
Named for Terry 'Scavenger' Naughton. AW Pilot made famous with his writings (The "I go diving down..." series, for instance). Passed away July 2, 1994, for a great loss to the AW Community, and any community he was ever a part of. I've read his "Flying Tigers" story so many times, I have it almost memorized word-for-word, and it brings a tear to my eye EVERY time I read it.
He has been remembered and recognized by Kesmai and the community in many ways...from this airfield naming, to the fact that NOBODY can EVER use the CPID "SCAV" (it's locked forever), to if you look real closely at the P-40 on the main airfield screen (P40 was Scav's favorite plane), you can see the word "SCAV" painted in under the cockpit...
"The Shaky Stick" Great pilot, used to train on AOL AW4W a few years back, dont remember anything special about him!
Icer

A DOS AW flier, from out west here somewhere I believe. I remember him from the days when I flew as part of the AD squad. Haven't seen him around in quite some time.

Every time I think about Wolverine I have to laugh...he's got a great

I think it was early 1992 when I used that handle. Switched to my current "Gypsy Baron" handle long about early 1993. Used to drive Buffs almost exclusively.

Turkey Ham
Well, this is named after the Turkey Ham squadron. That much I do know. Home to the likes of the CO, Quarters, Holmes, Ketchup, Slug, Dusty, Shaky Stick, some others I've not heard much of, nor have met. And of course, the fabled Scavanger, poet lauriate of Air Warrior. Being a Lady, she knew exactly what to say to choke any testosterone macho B.S. right at the source :)

Known as "Subby" ( Arf! ), Gail came along and was one of the first women pilots to really kick butt in AW. She was preceeded by the mysterious "Lady in Red" back in the DOS days, but Gail is much more "out there" and involved. I believe she runs a crash pad at her place for the Reno Air Races :)
This is named after Tim "Black Hawk" Melton. A DOS AW flier who doesn't fly
much these days. He is quite active in the Scenario Masters Guild and hosts our mail server.
This field is NOT named for the "Blackhawk" or "BH" that fly's AW3 regularly. Different sort, different ego. Tim's a great guy and "deserved" that field :)

In 1925 the U.S.S. Saratoga (CV-3) became the first United States vessel to be launched as an aircraft carrier. Two years later she was commissioned. She was one of only three pre-war United States aircraft carriers to survive WWII and was the oldest aircraft carrier in service, until she was sunk in the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll.
In 1941, when the fleet was crippled at Pearl Harbor by the sudden Japanese attack, the SARA became the backbone of the American defenses in the Pacific. During WWII, her planes flew thousands of air strikes against shore installations in the Solomon Islands, Bougainville, Munda airfield, Vella Lavella, Rabaul, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Eniwetok, Kwajelein, Sumatra, Java, Iwo Jima and the Tokyo area of Japan. In addition, her planes are known to have sunk one carrier, two cruisers and several destroyers. Heavy damage was inflicted on eight enemy cruisers, one battleship, several destroyers and numerous merchant ships. Hundreds of enemy aircraft were shot down, and many more were destroyed onthe ground.
She did not escape unharmed. Twice, she was struck by torpedoes fired by enemy submarines and forced to retire for repairs. Her heaviest damage was suffered near Iwo Jima when she was struck by seven bombs and five Kamikaze planes. Fires and explosions ripped the ship as her gunners fought back and her repair crews struggled to control the damage. The SARATOGA survived, but 123 shipmates gave their lives and over 300 were injured.
After the end of the war, SARA was placed on the "Magic Carpet" run and, in eight trips, returned 30,000 war weary veterans to the United States.
She now rests quietly on the bottom of Bikini Lagoon.

In December 1941 she and Lexington were the only carriers operating out of Hawaii. Enterprise - flagship of Vice-Admiral Halsey's Task Force Sixteen - was ferrying aircraft to Wake Island at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. She participated in the earliest US carrier raids in the Pacific, and in the Doolittle Raidshe escorted her sister Hornet, with Enterprise again serving as Halsey's flagship.
At Midway she carried the flag of Admiral Spruance (who replaced Halsey when the latter was disabled by illness) and played the most important role of any ship in the battle - Enterpriseaircraft can probably be credited with hitting three of the four Japanese carriers sunk at Midway, and can certainly be credited with the destruction of two.
She then went on to play a vital role in the Guadalcanal campaign. At the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August she received her first battle damage - a bomb hit. In October she was again damaged, at the Battle of Santa Cruz, but, although still not fully repaired, made an essential contribution to the decisive American victory in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in the following month.
She in fact participated in every carrier-versus-carrier battle of the Pacific War after Coral Sea (Midway, Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz and Philippine Sea), and in almost all other actions of the US fast carrier forces including Leyte Gulf. In April 1945, during the Okinawa campaign, she was struck three times by kamikaze aircraft and badly damaged. She then returned to the United States for repairs and saw no further service [before the ceasefire].

Notes: Commissioned on the 30 Sep 1937. Was sunk on the 7 June 1942 due to enemy action at the Battle of Midway .
Yorktown played a crucial role in two of the most important battles of the Pacific War, the Battle of the Coral Sea (the first carrier-versus-carrier battle in history), at which Lexington was sunk, and at the decisive Battle of Midway. At the latter, on 4 June 1942, Yorktown was bombed and torpedoed by aircraft from the Japanese carrier Hiryu, and the following day was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine.
On Wednesday 20 May, 1998, An expedition found the wreck of the USS Yorktown more than 5km down on the Pacific Ocean floor (1pm) almost 56 years after being torpedoed during the decisive Battle of Midway.
An expedition led by the National Geographic Society identified the aircraft carrier's gun emplacement from a videotape shot by a navy remote submersible vehicle on Tuesday.
Confirmation was made by Yorktown survivor Mr Bill Surgi from aboard the navy research vessel Laney Chouest.
Although National Geographic won't reveal the exact location of the wreck, the expedition had been searching an area about 2,000km west-northwest of Honolulu.
The ocean depths there reach nearly 5,180 metres.
"In 1942, America lost a great warrior; today we've reclaimed her," said expedition leader Mr Robert Ballard, who also found the Titanic wreckage.
The Battle of Midway was fought June 3-6, 1942, and was a key victory for the Allies in World War II.
The battle is considered the turning point in the war with Japan because it halted the Japanese advance in the Pacific and opened the door for amphibious invasions of Japanese islands.
The Yorktown, built in Newport News, Virginia, was 247 metres long, weighed 19,800 tonnes and carried 75 aircraft, including 50 bombers.
During the Battle of Midway, it was seriously damaged by bombers from the Japanese carrier Hiryu and then sank after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.
There were 2,270 survivors.
Although the Yorktown will be explored and filmed by a submersible vehicle, it will not be disturbed and nothing will be taken from it. Federal law prohibits the disturbance of any navy wreck.

Hornet launched Doolittle's twin-engined B-25 bombers in their sensational raid on Japan on April 18 1942, and in June she also took part in the Battle of Midway. Her torpedo-plane squadron - Torpedo 8 - was annihilated in the battle, all 15 of the squadron's aircraft being shot down, and only one of its aircrew (the pilot Ensign Gay) surviving.
Hornet went on to play a vital part in the Guadalcanal campaign in late 1942. She too was sunk - at the Battle of Santa Cruz - after being hit by bombs and torpedoes from Japanese carrier-borne aircraft.
Hornet's captain from the time of her commissioning until after Midway was M.A. Mitscher, who went on to command the Fast Carrier Task Force and to be regarded as the outstanding carrier admiral of the War.
